Treatment For Poison Ivy

Poison ivy is a plant which produces a resin named urushiol. This resin is allergic and can cause rashes on skin. It is always good to take precaution so that you may remain safe from this problem. But, in case you are caught by these rashes, then there are some very effective treatments which you can follow. At the initial stage, you can apply wet dressing, cold water compressions or concentrated Domeboro with water at the itchy areas to stop blister formation. Oatmeal baths are also a good way to stop and soothe itchy rashes.

Although, rashes get clear in 14-21 days but it totally depends on the nature of itching. You can also use diphenhydramine (Benadryl) to control the itching but it can make you drowsy. Blisters can be cured by applying cortisone cream which is easily available on any medical store.In case of severe rashes; oral steroids like prednisone would be very effective and provide instant relief. This medication course should be continued for at least 10-14 days for permanent relief. Other medications which are very effective for poison ivy are – Atarax, Aveeno, Calamine cream, Triamcinolone acetonide, Cortizone and pain relieving skin lotion by Caladryl. These medications and applications will help you in relieving thepain and soothing the rashes. You would also find these medications very effective in reducing the blisters.

Other than these medications, scrub by Tecnu, soap by Burts’ Bees, and treatment kit by Cortaid are also very effective in curing poison ivy. Herbal applications like Aloe Vera are also very helpful in curing this problem. It leaves a soothing effect. If you have a history of rashes or any other similar skin disease, then it would be better to consult a dermatologist at an early date.
